- Superficial Circumflex Iliac Artery Perforator flap (SCIP flap): Revival of the inguinal donor site?
Introduction:
The SCIP flap based on a superficial circumflex iliac perforator artery (SCIA) was described for the first time by Koshima in 2004 as a large and thin groin flap, with a low morbidity.
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the benefits of SCIP flap to cover body defects, thank to an international literature review and our personnal experience of SCIP flap in the plastic surgery department of Amiens’hospital.
Patients and methods:
From January 2007 to August 2016, twelve patients had a SCIP flap reconstruction in the plastic surgery department of Amiens’hospital. Preoperative vascular mapping was routinely performed using a color doppler ultrasound. Meanwhile, a literature review on PubMed database was conducted covering the period from January 2004 to August 2016.
Results:
Thirteen flaps were performed. Defects concerned upper limb (n = 5), lower limb (n = 6) and groin (n = 2). The average age was 30.5 years. The average preoperative doppler mapping time was 8 minutes. The average size of flaps was 62.5 cm [21; 180cm²]. The average time required for raising flaps was 61 min [52; 82 min]. It has not been observed any complication of the flap or donor site. Furthermore, our literature review identified 50 papers and 442 SCIP flaps described with many technical variants.
Conclusion:
The SCIP flap has many advantages over McGregor flap. It is a versatile flap giving extensive and thin pallet, adapted to all kinds of defects. It overcomes all the disadvantages of the groin flap with a significantly lower morbidity. The surgical technique is safe, accessible and precision is increased by preoperative color doppler mapping. The many strengths of the SCIP flap make it a must in the decision-making algorithm for defetcs management and come to revitalize the site inguinal donor.
- WhatsApp: Improvement Tool for Surgical Team Communication
Latterly, instant messaging applications met a growing popularity in both private and professional sectors. Permitting a safe, economical, effective communication tool and optimizing team data transmissions.
However, in light of recent American scandals (Snowden case ...) and as these applications use different encryption systems; optimal security and data privacy can’t constantly be guaranteed, thus constituting a prohibitive element in the medical field.
Here, we illustrate our experience as the Amiens university hospital plastic surgery team using this type of application for medical transmissions. Featuring our 4 year trail including the software features, possibilities and the enhancement it brings in our everyday practice.
